Billericay Decide to Reward Paul Konchesky’s Loyalty with Captain’s Armband
Billericay have decided to make former Liverpool and Leicester City defender Paul Konchesky as the captain.
The 36-year-old is now the holder of the armband after deciding against a move to Stevenage, despite receiving an offer that was almost twice his wages at Billericay. The former England international is regarded as one of the best players in the Billericay set up.
However, the club feared the worst when Stevenage showed an interest in the player just before the end of the transfer window.Billericay are currently offering only around £ 900 per week for Konchesky – a far cry from his days as the Premier League footballer when he was running around £ 50,000 per week.
However, Stevenage had reportedly provided him with wages of around £ 1800 per week. The League Two club would also have been able to provide a far bigger exposure for the player.
Yet,Konchesky decided to stay at Billericay and he was rewarded with the armband during the recent game on Saturday. Billericay suffered a 1-0 defeat on the opening day against Kingstonian.
Billericay manager Glenn Tamplin says that the commitment shown by Konchesky is a great gesture. It is expected that Konchesky will be named as the captain from the start in the next match. The club are up against Lowestoft Town in the Isthmian Premier League.
“Paul Konchesky will captain the side at Lowestoft this evening and be the team captain this season.Paul was offered £1,800 a week to move to Stevenage in League Two, but he has turned that down.He is earning £1,000 a week at Billericay but he has chosen to stay which shows that these players are not just in this for the money. We are building something big here and we need to regain our focus,” said Tamplin.
